Principal Eric Goslinga Presented the Homelessness Report to School Board (watch recording) – Principal Eric Goslinga presented the 2022-23 Homelessness Report to the MCSD school board. According to Goslinga’s report, more than 140 students were identified as meeting the McKinney-Vento criteria in the 2022-23 school year. See more information from the report by clicking here.

School Board Introduced to 2023-24 District Mentoring and Induction Handbook (watch recording) – Director of Instruction Shauna Smith and Curriculum and Professional Development Leader of Mentoring/Specialist Julie Thede presented the new District Mentoring and Induction Handbook. This item will be voted on at the next board meeting. To view the handbook, click here.

Adult Meal Prices Have Increased for 2023-24 (watch recording) – Director of Nutrition Lynn Large recommended a price increase of adult meals to $4.84, the minimum set by the USDA. The adult meal price is determined using the free student reimbursement, the performance based reimbursement and the USDA Food Meal Rate. The school board approved 6-0. Recognitions (watch recording)

  • Seal of Biliteracy & English Proficiency: Marshalltown High School had 56 members of the Class of 2023 earn the Seal of Biliteracy, a record count for the district. To earn it, a student during high school must achieve proficiency on a state English assessment and establish proficiency in another world language assessment. In addition, 163 K-12 English Learner students who have reached English proficiency and have exited the program. These students were recognized at the Celebration of English Proficiency, a new event that will be held annually, on May 31. English Learner and Migrant Program Coordinator Rachel Inks and students will speak about the program and experience this past school year.

Student Behavior and Chronic Absenteeism Workshop for Future Board Meeting (watch recording) – Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte is working with the Education Advisory Board (EAB) to schedule Board and/or Administrative workshops prior to the 2023-24 school year to review the latest research concerning the current state of student misbehavior and what the research indicates are current best practices to effectively address student’s behavioral health needs (proactively and reactively) and student chronic absenteeism. Schutte said he is working to bring dates soon. 

Industrial Arts & Technology Curriculum Approved by School Board (watch recording) – College and Career Readiness CPDL Jenni Allen recommended the purchase of four different DEPCO modules at an approximate total cost of $99,665. Of the total cost, $41,735 will be paid out of RPP and $57,930 in generals funds. The curriculum was approved by the board 7-0. Click here to view the presentation given during the meeting.

7th-12th Grade Science Curriculum Recommendation Presented to School Board (watch recording) – Director of Instruction Shauna Smith and 7-12 CPDL Jennifer O’ Neal presented the 7th-12th grade science curriculum recommendation.   • Stalzer Photography: MCSD wishes to recognize our local community business partner Stalzer Photography as a “Career Readiness Partner.” This recognition honors Stalzer’s outstanding support and service to our students, their parents and our staff as we strive to make all Bobcats Career Ready. The human capital support through volunteering their time, talent and resources for the betterment of the Marshalltown CSD is commendable. John and Kenzie Stalzer accepted the recognition.
