Lenihan Lego Leaguers recognized for Global Innovation Award nomination – watch recording
The Marshalltown School Board recognized the Lenihan Lego Leaguers at the Monday, Feb. 21 regular meeting. The Lenihan students were among just 16 Lego League teams statewide to be nominated for the FIRST Lego League Global Innovation Award.

The team’s project focused on minimizing human error in the process of transporting kidneys to transplant patients. The students shared an engaging prototype demonstration at Monday evening’s board meeting.

While the project did not advance to the national level of competition, Lenihan Extended Learning Program (XLP) teacher Vanessa Engel said she is excited to see further achievement from her students in the coming years.

Partnership between MCSD & Child Abuse Prevention Services highlighted – watch recording
The robust partnership between Marshalltown Schools and Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) to provide important programming was highlighted on Monday evening. Linda Havelka and Esmeralda Monroy of CAPS said the partnership provides services like migrant tutoring, connecting families to resources, and age-appropriate sexual abuse prevention and sexual health programming.

District demographic data shared – watch recording
Director of Human Resources Dr. Nora Ryan shared MCSD student and staff demographic data from the 2020-21 school year on Monday evening. The data collected was in alignment with federal demographic definitions.

Board hears update on work to address dyslexia – watch recording
Director of Special Services Matt Cretsinger shared an update on the progress made by the Iowa Dyslexia Board over the past several months. The presentation included a brief history of the work being done at the state and District levels to support students with dyslexia, as well as the District’s vision going forward.

School funding, budgeting process overview presented – watch recording
Director of Finance Paulette Newbold shared information on how public schools are funded in Iowa, including how supplemental state aid works. The presentation also covered MCSD’s budgeting process.

Communications
Communications Director Adam Sodders reviewed the good news from the district by sharing newspaper articles as well as school communications articles. That list can be seen here.
