Student School Board Representatives Approved and Introduced (watch recording) – Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte recommended Deanna Hernandez Carranza, Natalie Andrade, and Daisy Covarrubias Andrade as the Student School Board Representatives for the 2023-24 school year. The three introduced themselves during recognitions before being approved by the MCSD school board.

2023-24 School Board and Superintendent Goals Approved (watch recording) – Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte recommended approval of the 2023-24 school board and superintendent goals. Rogers and Anson School Improvement Action Plan Update Presented to MCSD School Board (watch recording) – Director of Instruction Shauna Smith and CPDL Erica Finders gave an update to the board regarding Anson and Rogers school improvement action plans. To view the presentation, click here.

Recognitions (watch recording)

  • Bobcat Burger Donation – Legends American Grill Manager Brady Ridout will be presenting a donation to Activities Director Ryan Isgrig raised by the Burger Battle and the restaurant’s sales of the “Bobcat Burger” for which $1 of every purchase goes to MHS Activities. 
  • Mariachi Bands in the News [information] – KCCI sat down with both the Miller and MHS mariachi bands on Sept. 21 to film a feature story in relation to Hispanic Heritage Month coverage they are doing. Our district should be very proud of both the students and band directors who were interviewed. Plus the reporter was super impressed with how the band sounded and their respectfulness. The story should be running sometime this week.
  • Bobcat Spotlight [information] – The Times-Republican kicked off a new recurring feature series called “Bobcat Spotlight,” which highlights MHS students involved in activities other than sports. Read the first feature story about one of our E-Sports students here.
  • National Custodian Day [information] – The Marshalltown Community School District would like to acknowledge the custodial team, who ensures that all our buildings are kept clean and safe every day. We deeply appreciate the dedicated work they do for our students and staff. Thank you!

Recognition was given to Adland Engraving & Screen Print Company as a “Career Readiness Partner” during the school board meeting on Monday night. Dave and Judy Adland were present to accept the recognition.

MCSD School Board Approve 2023-24 Legislative Priorities (watch recording) – Superintendent Theron Schutte recommended the legislative priorities for the 2023-24 school year. The priorities selected were the following: student achievement, supplemental state aid, teacher recruitment, and mental health. The school board passed the legislation priority recommendations 5-0. Recommendation Made to Name Portion of Welcome Center After Former Anson Elementary Principal (watch recording) – Superintendent Theron Schutte recommended naming the Welcome Center portion of the Orpheum Theater after former Anson Elementary Principal and MCSD School Board President Bea Niblock. The new name of the facility would be the B.A. Niblock/MCSD Orpheum Welcome Center. The recommendation is based on current and ongoing contributions for the start up of the Welcome Center and a significant financial pledge for annual senior scholarships to support post-secondary education. The school board will be asked to approve at the Aug. 21 meeting. You can view documents about this facility naming by clicking here.

The Welcome Center front entrance, which is located at 220 E. Main Street. Dr. Theron Schutte recommended to name the facility after former Anson Elementary Principal Bea Niblock to the school board on Monday night.

Recognitions (watch recording)

  • Co-Ed State Golf Champions: Natalie Henson and Ryan Schmit claimed the 2A Co-Ed Golf Championship with a score of 74 at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.
  • Stadium Seating: American Aluminum and Seating, Inc. Owner and Marshalltown High School graduate Jim Palmer recently donated four team benches to the stadium complex with a value of $4,000.
  • Flag Pole: Marshalltown High School graduate Tom Apgar represented the Class of 1973 to donate a check for $2,600 toward the purchase and installation of the new flag pole at the stadium complex.
  • Adland Engraving: The Marshalltown Community School District wishes to recognize our local community business partner Adland Engraving & Screen Print Company as a “Career Readiness Partner.” This recognition honors Adland’s outstanding support and service to our district students, parents and staff as we strive to make all Bobcats Career Ready. Their ongoing support and contribution towards the betterment of the Marshalltown CSD is admirable. David and Judy Adland accepted the recognition.

Chronic Absenteeism Report Given to School Board (watch recording) – District Attendance Coordinator Kayla McCall reported to the school board the chronic absenteeism report. The report presentation can be seen by clicking here.

ELPA21 Conversation Report Given to School Board (watch recording) – English Learner and Migrant Program Coordinator Rachel Inks presented to the school board the ELPA21 and annual English language performance results. The presentation can be seen by clicking here.

Student Behavior and Chronic Absenteeism Workshop for Future Board Meeting (watch recording) – Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte is working with the Education Advisory Board (EAB) to schedule Board and/or Administrative workshops prior to the 2023-24 school year to review the latest research concerning the current state of student misbehavior and what the research indicates are current best practices to effectively address student’s behavioral health needs (proactively and reactively) and student chronic absenteeism. Schutte said he is working to bring dates soon. 

Industrial Arts & Technology Curriculum Approved by School Board (watch recording) – College and Career Readiness CPDL Jenni Allen recommended the purchase of four different DEPCO modules at an approximate total cost of $99,665. Of the total cost, $41,735 will be paid out of RPP and $57,930 in generals funds. The curriculum was approved by the board 7-0. Click here to view the presentation given during the meeting.

7th-12th Grade Science Curriculum Recommendation Presented to School Board (watch recording) – Director of Instruction Shauna Smith and 7-12 CPDL Jennifer O’ Neal presented the 7th-12th grade science curriculum recommendation.   • Stalzer Photography: MCSD wishes to recognize our local community business partner Stalzer Photography as a “Career Readiness Partner.” This recognition honors Stalzer’s outstanding support and service to our students, their parents and our staff as we strive to make all Bobcats Career Ready. The human capital support through volunteering their time, talent and resources for the betterment of the Marshalltown CSD is commendable. John and Kenzie Stalzer accepted the recognition.

Listed Class of 2023 Marshalltown High School Graduates Receives Approval (watch recording) – MHS Principal Jacque Wyant received approval of the MHS 2023 list of graduates as presented, pending fulfillment of graduation requirements. A total of 376 students, including those who have already been board approved and foreign exchange students, are on the list to graduate on Sunday, May 28. Computer Science is Elementary Presentation (watch recording) – Kyle Young, Lindsay Stanton, and Erica Finders presented the computer science instruction that is happening at Lenihan and how that fits into the district wide work in this area. Click here to see their presentation.

Recognitions (watch recording)

  • Penny War: Hoglan Elementary School had its “Penny War” fundraiser, which lasted from May 1 to May 5. Every grade competed to see how many pennies, which were considered positive points, they could collect. Students used their point reducing “silver”, other coins and spare dollar bills, on their opponents’ collection containers. All of the funds were to support the K-9 units for the Marshalltown Police Department and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. Click here to read more about the fundraiser.
  • Third Quarter Employee Recognitions: Third quarter Employee of the Quarter awards were recently given. The following employees received awards: Jaime Vergara from Marshalltown Learning Academy, Molly Tafta from Hoglan Elementary School, Diane Simpson from Lenihan Intermediate School, and Yumi Clark and Marshalltown High School.
