Franklin’s buddies program helps build connections among students

The personnel items included five more early retirements including:
Jeff Hoogensen, 7th grade social studies teacher at Miller- 28 years with district
Michael Eggleston- PE teacher at Fisher Elementary School-19 years in the district
Deborah Friday – 2nd grade teacher at Hoglan Elementary School – 19 years with the district
Elda Reyes, ELL teacher at Franklin Elementary – been with district with 15 years.
Leah Mattox, 6th grade teacher at Lenihan-  been with district 28 years

Franklin Elementary School Presentation
Franklin Principal Tim Holmgren, along with teacher leaders Amy Phillips, Mallori Ghent, Teri Hungerford,  Ashley Moeller and Amanda Goings, presented.
This meeting they decided to highlight the buddies program at Franklin, where students are paired with mentors two grades above them or serve as mentors to students two grades below them.

“They have opportunities to problem solve with the their buddy, they can learn with their buddy.” Holmgren said.

Other skills learned are academics, social skills and relationship-building. Kindergartners are paired with third grade buddies and 1st graders are paired with fourth grade buddies.

“They are always excited to go to buddies (time),” said fourth grade teacher Ashley Moeller.

Second graders are not involved in the buddy program, but they go to the Iowa Veterans Home every year which is a great way to work on their social skills.

Dual Language Program Iowa Assessment Results
Jon McKenzie, Director of Assessment &  Comprehensive Improvement from Central Rivers AEA  completed a program evaluation for the dual language program in Marshalltown.
He presented along with Rachel Inks, ELL Coordinator and Lisa Stevenson, Director of Instruction.
He talked about the differences between the dual language students and non-dual language students in the district.
Overall, McKenzie found there are no significant differences across grade levels.
“When looking at the differences of reading, math and science scores on the Iowa Assessments across students in the Dual Language program and students not in the Dual Language school who are all ELL students there is no differences in scores across grades, even though scores in these subject areas increase dramatically for all groups of students from the early grades to higher grades in late middle school to high school,” McKenzie said.
The district continues to work to improve the dual language program, Stevenson said.
Board Member Mike Miller said the district should do more work to promote the dual language program to differentiate it from other area school districts.

Marshalltown High School Roundhouse Phase II Budget Update
Architect Kevin Eipperle of  FEH Design presented this budget summary.
He said it appears they are on track to be in line with the $100,580 contingency fund to pay for change orders.

Student School Board Representative Update
Jocelin Sharfnejda, America Dominguez and Jane Ragland presented an update on MHS.
They talked about the district speech contest, science bowl, boys swimming district meet and upcoming school activities.

2019-2020 Marshalltown High School Course Guide
MHS Principal Jacque Wyant presented this course guide for the 2019-20 school year including several new courses.
The board approved the course guide.

“Leaders of Learning: How District, School, and Classroom Leaders Improve Student Achievement” Board Book Study
The board and administrators continued discussion on the book with a focus on Chapter 8.

Depository Resolution
Paulette Newbold, Director of Business Operations, presented this document, which this is something the board is asked to approve annually.
The board approved the resolution.

Application to the School Budget Review Committee
Matt Cretsinger, Director of Special Services, said this is part of a consortium that shares administrative costs of Grandwood. Marshalltown’s cost is $2,766.24. Grandwood works with students with significant intellectual disabilities and behavior needs.
The board approved the application.

The first wrestling practice was held in the Allie Morrison Wrestling Room on February 4.

“Monday was the first day that wrestlers had practice in the new facilities of the Roundhouse.  Can you imagine the excitement that filled the room as wrestlers took to the mat? Setbacks from weather and supply delays made the use of the facility an even bigger reward.
The board received a budget update on the Roundhouse Phase II project from FEH Design at Monday’s meeting.  The latest change orders were discussed and approved. We are nearing completion of the project with the sincere hopes of finishing within the budget!
A new facility long overdue and within the budget!  What a success for this district!” – Bea Niblock

New MHS class prepares future teachers

MHS Principal Jacque Wyant and students presented an update on MHS. The presentation showcased two new programs at MHS including Introduction to Education and Foods III. MHS students  Pablo Cuevas Montes and  Samantha Snyder talked about the new class Intro to Education.
“I’ve always wanted to be a teacher,” Samantha said. “I’ve really enjoyed this class.”
“I do want to become a teacher, that’s something I do want to pursue,” Pablo said.
Both Pablo and Samantha complimented MHS teacher Jaime Anderson for being a great teacher of this new class.
MHS student Ariel Daniel talked about the Foods III class taught by Alexa Hotopp. Ariel was able to get ServSafe certified as a result of Nutrition Director Lynn Large teaching it to the class.
Ariel also talked about other experiences in the class and the different types of foods they made.
“I learned so much and have the hands on experience to create my own twist or style on food,” Daniel said.
She has an interest in studying event management in college.
Mrs. Wyant also updated the board with this attendance center plan at MHS.

Public Hearing
A public hearing was be held for the sale of surplus technology equipment. This is for the sale of Mitel branded analog and digital phone handsets, controllers and various phone components from the district’s retired phone system.

Recognition – Poetry Out Loud
MHS sophomore Olivia Adams Zmolek recited two poems for the board including “On Virtue” by Philliss Wheatley and “The Poem You’ve Been Waiting For” by Tarfia Faizullah. Olivia is the Poetry Out Loud contest winner from MHS who will compete at the state contest in Des Moines on March 3.

Linda Russell-  Special education teacher at Miller. She will retire after 19 years of service to the district.
Mike Loupee – Science teacher at MHS – He will end school year with 21 years of teaching at MHS and has served as coach in several capacities including head MHS boys swim coach for 23 years.

Public Comment
Courtney Simons- MHS English teacher – talked about a district correction to IPERS withdrawals which affects her paycheck each month.

Financial Literacy Course Requirement
Jacque Wyant, MHS Principal, and Eric Goslinga, MLA Principal and Director of Instruction Dr. Lisa Stevenson presented on this topic.
As a result of action from the 2018 legislative session there is a  new Financial Literacy graduation requirement beginning with the class of 2020.
Goslinga and MLA staff have come up with an online course to help meet the requirement in the immediate future.
“We’re hopeful that the online format that we created…is able to meet the Department of Ed standards,” Stevenson said.
The board approved the course of action by the district.

Board Work session
A board work session preceded the regular meeting on January 14 on the MHS athletics master plan.
FEH Architect Kevin Eipperle presented this document along with MHS Activities Director Rollie Ackerman.

The next regular meeting of the school board will be at 5 p.m. on Feb. 4.

There will be a board work session from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, January 28 on the topic of enrollment forecasting.

“We begin each meeting reading the district mission statement together and end each meeting listing the things that we have done during the meeting to make education better for the students in the district.  Each of those practices is to remind us of why we are there – students!
Having students make presentations to the board is always a plus.  At Monday’s board meeting, Olivia Adams Zmolek recited the poetry that she will recite at the state Poetry Out Loud contest on March 3rd.  Students from the high school shared thoughts about the Foods courses and the Intro to Education course.  And, Jane Ragland, student board representative, made a presentation about activities completed and upcoming events at the high school.

Seal of Biliteracy
Dr. Lisa Stevenson, Director of Instruction, and Rachel Inks, English Learner Coordinator presented this document about the upcoming Seal of Biliteracy which came down from Governor Kim Reynolds. It is an award given by a public school district to recognize students who have attained proficiency in two or more languages, one being English, by high school graduation.

“We have an exciting time coming up for us where we will be able to acknowledge our students with a Seal of Biliteracy,” Inks said.

In order to receive the seal on transcripts and their diplomas, students will have to demonstrate they can speak and write in two languages. Inks said this is something to celebrate at MHS.

“The majority of our Class of 2019 is already well positioned to earn this seal,” Inks said.

Dr.  Stevenson said she is excited as our district’s diverse population stands to benefit from this seal.

Randy Denham, Business Manager, was honored at the fall conference of the Iowa Association of School Business Officials in Altoona on October 31, 2018. Randy received recognition for achieving proficiency on all levels of the four-year sequence of classes offered through Iowa State University’ Iowa School Business Management Academy.

The two talked about the 30 minutes block of intervention support. Teachers “flood” 30 minute blocks which are staggered depending on grade level

Communication/ Marketing Plan
Andrew Potter, Director of Communications, presented this plan with strategies to further promote the district and provide better avenues for communication with parents and the community. Discussion was held regarding the plan. The board approved the plan.

State Senator Jeff Edler, right, and State Representative Dean Fisher addressed the board as they prepare for the 2018 legislative session.
Elder talked about SAVE Extension mental health services, school transportation equity, and State Supplemental Aid (SSA).
Fisher said it is their goal to the SSA done early.
“The (state) budget is looking at little bit better this year than the last couple of years,” Fisher said.
“Hopefully we can do a little better than we have the past couple of years,” (on SSA). The board also presented the IASB legislative priorities and spoke on a few of those priorities.

Application to School Budget Review Committee for Special Education Administrative Costs associated with River Hills Consortium Program for the 2019-2020 School Year
Director of Business Operations Paulette Newbold presented this item.
This is a consortium which go before SBRC for approval for administrative services for special education.

At-Risk Budget 2019-2020 School Year
Dr. Lisa Stevenson, Director of Instruction, presented details on the at-risk program at the December 3 board meeting and the budget for approval at this meeting. The board approved the at-risk budget.

Department of Transportation Purchase and Small Vehicle Fleet Update
Rex Kozak, Director of Transportation, requested permission to move forward with purchase of four vehicles.
The board approved the purchases of a 5 Passenger Vehicle from Jensen Ford 2019 Fusion for $17,289.00 Vans: from Dave Wright Auto 2019 Grand Caravan SE $20,700.00 and 2019 Grand Caravan $20,500.00 and a 9 Passenger from Clemons 2019 Suburban $39,639.00 Total $98,128.00

E-Rate Funding Item Request
Director of Technology, Josh Wesley,  presented on E-Rate funding item requests for the 2019-2020 school year. He requested  approval to publish an RFP, in conjunction with the E-Rate form 470, for 27 HP POE switches and 4 Cisco core switches and installation services. Total estimated cost is $90,000. Estimated total cost after E-Rate funding commitment is $18,000.

State Auditor’s Report; Special Investigation Report
Paulette Newbold, Director of Business Operations, and Randy Denham, Business Manager, gave a summary of the continuous improvement processes to the board on the heels of  State Auditor’s special investigation. The investigation was requested by the district as a result of payroll taxes that were not filed on time from a former payroll specialist and a penalty of more than $600,000 from the IRS.
Newbold said the district has spent a lot of time over the last 6 months evaluating oversight procedures to mitigate this from ever happening again.
“It is our goal to make sure everything in that whole entire payroll cycle has oversight,” Newbold said.
Discussion was held about the improvements and other items revealed in the investigation.

State Representative Mark Smith
State Representative Mark Smith addressed the board as he prepares for the 2019 legislative session.

“I feel like I’ve always been a strong supporter of public education,” Smith said.

Representative Smith said it appears to be a “tough budget year again.”

Dr. Schutte talked about unfunded and underfunded mandates – such as financial literacy that needs to be implemented soon. Also discussion was held regarding SAVE ( the statewide penny sales tax which sunsets on December 31, 2029), mental health, school calendars, the school funding formula  and more.

The board also presented Representative Smith the Iowa Association priorities and school board priorities.  State Senator Jeff Edler and Representative Dean Fisher are expected to address the board at the December 17 board meeting.

2019-2020 At-Risk Budget Overview
Director of Instruction Dr. Lisa Stevenson and Director Of Special Services Matt Cretsinger presented this report as information only. This is a result of work of an at-risk committee, which meets monthly.
Dr. Stevenson reported while we made headway in increasing the graduation rate and decreasing the  dropout rate, we still have work to do.

“At least our trajectory is moving in the right direction,” Dr. Stevenson said.

She said, they continue to look to improve on chronic absenteeism, behavior issues, overall proficiency in reading and math and credit recovery. Two of the new priorities are to expand Bobcat University and expand the i-JAG at high school. The budget is near the same amount requested the previous year. Board and administrator discussion was held.  Director of Business Operations Paulette Newbold also went over the budget.
The proposed dropout prevention and at-risk budget will be brought before the board for possible approval at the December 17 meeting.

2019-2020 School Year Calendar
Dr. Theron Schutte and Communications Director Andrew Potter presented a feedback results summary from parents and staff on the tentative 2019-20 calendar. While the results varied, spring break seemed to be the most talked about topic in the feedback.

Board President Bea Niblock said in the future she would like to see two calendars for staff to vote on as was done in the past. A public hearing on the proposed calendar will be held at the December 17 board meeting.

Transportation Director Rex Kozak sought authorization from the board get bids for three new school buses
Mr. Kozak will report back to the board with bids he received. The board granted authorization to seek bids.

“This is the time of the year when our legislators are invited to visit with the school board. Last night, Representative Mark Smith joined the board for a conversation.
The board shared its legislative priorities with Representative Smith and he shared his expectations for the 2019 session.

He indicated that this will be another year of low state aid. That is not good news for us as we have been working with a limited budget for a number of years now. Other items discussed included underfunded mandates, mental health concerns, and the continuation of the penny sales tax (SAVE).

Senator Jeff Edler and Representative Dean Fisher will be present at the December 17th board meeting for a similar discussion. Take up advocacy for our public schools and join us at our next meeting.” – Bea Niblock

Anson Elementary School Presentation
Principal Ronnie Manis, Counselor Ashley Chyma and Extended Learning Teacher Nicole Holman Lankelma presented this report, which focused on attendance, behavior and STEM activities.
Manis said they have tried several new tactics this year to increase student attendance and so far it’s working. Daily attendance is at 97 percent, which is up a few percentage points from last year. They went to morning meetings and put breakfast back in the classroom. They also have flags for classrooms to hang if they have 100 percent attendance that day.
“The kids love these flags,” Manis said. “When you motivate the kids to be at school it makes a huge difference.”
Chyma talked about the peace room which is a calming room where a student can feel safe and a way to calm down.
Lankelma talked about a makerspace cart with many creative projects, many of which are STEM related.
“It’s available for all students at Anson, not just the XLP kids,” Holman Lankelma said.

Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte thanks District Registrar Stacey Mommer for her work on the certified enrollment which resulted in the district being named on The Gold Star List.

Marshalltown Community School District Registrar, Stacey Mommer, and Assistant to the Director of Instruction, Maeia Milot (not in attendance), were recognized for their work on certified enrollment. The District was placed on the The Gold Star List, receiving special recognition from the Student Reporting in Iowa (SRI) team from the Iowa Department of Education.

Better Boardsmanship Award

The Miller handbook was not updated when others were updates made to head lice to other handbooks in district. This item updated that handbook.

2019-2020 School Year Calendar
A tentative 2019-20 school calendar was presented to the board. It mirrors the current calendar year in many ways. It has also been brought before the administrative team and calendar committee for feedback.
The tentative calendar will next be sent to parents and staff for feedback before being brought back to the board for approval in December.

Application to the School Budget Review Committee for 2018 Modified Supplemental Authority for Increasing Enrollment, Open Enrollment Out and Limited English Proficiency Instruction Beyond Five Years

Approve SBRC Application for Increasing Enrollment, Open Enrollment Out, and LEP Instruction Beyond Five Years as presented. The recommendation is to apply for the authority for LEP instruction beyond 5 years in the amount of $1,154,626 and open enrollment out not on the fall 2017 count in the amount of $625,083.20 for a total request of $1,779,709.20.

Board approves voluntary early retirement program for end of 2018-19 school year
This program offers health insurance to those eligible for early retirement for 96 months or to the age of 65  who take early retirement.
Dr. Schutte presented additional information to the board as requested.
Employees are eligible by serving the district for 15 or more years and meeting rule of 88. The board held a lengthy discussion on the agenda item before approving the incentive for this spring.

“Monday’s board meeting found the board holding its annual organizational meeting due to changes in state law. This meeting used to be held in September. Board leadership was elected during this meeting.

Janelle Carter was elected vice president for the coming year. I have worked with Janelle for 3 years and am delighted to continue working with her. Janelle is an educator for fellow board members helping them understand issues and works tirelessly to move the district forward. Without Janelle’s leadership, the board would not work as seamlessly as it does.

And, I was elected president. I am honored that my fellow board members have confidence in my leadership skills and ability to drive our own learning to better understand the things that make our district great.

Jurgensen said many teachers are involved in leadership roles at the school.
“Our teachers are involved, usually in multiple things,” Jurgensen said.
The group talked about how they utilize leadership roles in the school and other items including supporting instruction and learning through the use of technology, accepting instruction from the instructional coach, classroom observations and more.

Student School Board Representative Update
Student Board Representatives America Dominguez, Jane Ragland and Jocelin Sharfnejda provided their regular update to the board, with updates on athletics and activities at MHS.

Certified Enrollment Count and Open Enrollment Count
Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte presented these updated enrollment numbers.
Current certified enrollment is at 5,366, down 92.78 students.
“We are going to continue to drill down,” Schutte said of the enrollment numbers.
This drop was after two straight years of enrollment increases in the district.

Bobcat University Summer 2018 Summary
Director of Instruction Dr. Lisa Stevenson and Clarissa Thompson of Mid-Iowa Community Action gave a summary of Bobcat University. The summer learning program had 237 elementary students attend.
Reading and math achievement data was positive for those who attended Bobcat University, Dr. Stevenson said.
“I am pleased with the results we had,” Dr. Stevenson said.

Leaders of Learning book study
The board and administrators continued with the book study, this time with Chapter 4.

Consideration of Voluntary Early Retirement Program
Dr. Schutte said this is the time of the year that the board decides if it wishes to offer the voluntary early retirement incentive for the coming year.
His recommendation for this year is for the board to approve offering the Voluntary Early Retirement Incentive program, which provides insurance to those retirees after retirement.
Board members expressed interest in seeing numbers of how much money it will save and the need for “hard data” on eligible retirees and how much the program costs.
The district will provide information at the next meeting to help the board with the decision.
The item was tabled until the requested financial data is received.

Bids for the Purchase of Buildings and Grounds Equipment
Director of Buildings and Grounds Chuck Springer recommended the board approve the Van-Wall Equipment Inc. bid in the amount $34,998 for a new utility tractor.
The utility tractor will replace an aging and high-mileage truck and will be used for moving snow, playground mulch, dirt work, work at the athletic complex and other general uses.
The board approved the bid.

“As the district continues to struggle with student achievement, the board received some encouraging news last night.

Bobcat University (the district’s elementary summer supplemental program) showed growth in the fall test scores of students who attended BU. Students attending the program showed greater growth in both reading and math than those who did not attend. That is welcomed news as the district strives to lessen summer learning loss.

Many things were learned about how to enrich this opportunity and organizers are working to diminish problems noted. Bobcat University proved to be a learning experience for students and adults alike.” – Bea Niblock

Clarissa Thompson talks about a new grant that will be administered by Mid-Iowa Community Action at the October 15 school board meeting.

Full Service Community School Grant
Clarissa Thompson of Mid-Iowa Community Action, presented this good news for the district. MICA will administer a 5-year, $2.5 million federal grant from the Department of Education.
The grant will support work in three elementary schools-  Anson, Woodbury and Rogers- selected as the three schools with the highest level of poverty among families.
The grant will provide for staff to support school readiness, attendance, enhance summer programming and parent engagement.
“We really are focused on expanding Bobcat University, that’s a huge piece of our work,” Thompson said.

MHS Roundhouse Phase II Project Budget Update
Architect Kevin Eipperle of FEH and Director of Buildings and Grounds Chuck Springer gave this update. The project allowance money has now been spent and the project has occurred added costs now to be covered in change orders.
The first change order included five items at a cost of $15,430. Eipperle said they expect two more change orders in the future of the project
The board accepted the $15,430 in change orders as presented.

“It was a wonderful experience and I’m really grateful for the opportunity,” Ragland said. Jocelin reported on the MHS art trip to Chicago. America updated the board  on the Latin Dance Group

Marshalltown Learning Academy Presentation
MLA Principal Eric Goslinga presented this attendance center plan for MLA, the at-risk high school in the district.
MLA has 108 students, 92.6 percent are free and reduced and 99 percent are at-risk
Since its inception, more than 200 students have graduated from MLA.Attendance remains an issue with students.Draws such as STEM curriculum are looking to keep more students in school.
“We have to generate hope,” Goslinga said.

MCSD Teacher Externship Academy recap
Dee Burt, College and Career Readiness leader and MHS teacher Dori Pinkerton spoke about the August teacher externship academy.
Burt said the first teacher externship academy we’ve ever had in Marshalltown included 43 teachers and 23 Marshalltown area businesses.
It included 11,008 hours of professional development learning.  Teachers learned about local businesses and careers
“We have a lot to be proud of in Marshalltown as far as different types of jobs for our students,” Burt said.
Pinkerton said she is passing on what she learned in the teacher academy to her students.
“They need to see the businesses that are around them have a place for them,” Pinkerton said.

Lenihan sixth grade  teachers Leah Mattox and Angie Lovell and Curriculum Director Erica Finders teamed up for this presentation, to talk about the recent Lenihan sixth grade trip to JA BizTown over the course of 6 days. JA BizTown is a facility full of mock businesses where students learn real world skills in a hands on environment.

“Angie and I think this is one of the best things we’ve ever done in our teaching,” Mattox said.

They taught curriculum for 5 weeks before they went to JA BizTown.

“We really saw some kids show some great leadership with this program,” Mattox said.

Sale of Surplus Technology Equipment –
A public hearing was held for the sale of surplus technology equipment. This will be for the sale of approximately 970 Dell Chromebooks, 760 Acer Chromebooks and 100 various computers, laptops, tablet devices that have been retired from use due to age. No public comments made at this hearing.

Leaders of Learning book study
The board and administrators continued with their discussion with chapter two of the book “Leaders of Learning: How District, School, and Classroom Leaders Improve Student Achievement” by Richard DuFour and Robert J. Marzano.

Special Education Deficit
Director of Special Services Matt Cretsinger presented this document on the special education deficit.  The current special education deficit is at $1.92 million, which decreased by $64,588 from the previous year.

The district is required to provide services to special education students no matter the cost. The average cost of a special education student in Marshalltown is nearly $18,000 a year.

Cretsinger sought board approval for the authority from the School Budget Review Committee to account for the deficit.

Discussion was held regarding a wide range of topics in special education.
The board approved that the district seek authority from the SBRC.

MHS podcast goes international

MHS teacher Jocelyn Frohwein and several MHS students talked about the new podcast produced by MHS students. The podcast has been listened to by people in several different countries including the United States, Czech Republic, Ireland, Mexico, Ireland, Indonesia and Turkey.
“We’ve gone international and it’s kind of neat to see that feedback,” Frohwein said.
The next podcast is nearly complete with a goal to have 20 new students speak on each one.

Marshalltown High School Roundhouse Phase 2 Schedule Update
District Director of Buildings and & Grounds Chuck Springer and Rick Ball and Matt Burch of Ball Team (general contractor) gave a Roundhouse Phase 2 update.
Due to delays, the substantial completion of the upper floor is now scheduled for January 7, 2019 and the lower floor (wrestling room) has a substantial completion date of December 10.

Out-of-State Trip for MHS Band and New Uniforms
MHS Band Director Brett Umthun and Associate Band Director Nick Gardner presented an out of state band trip for board approval.
The band is planning its next big trip to Orlando, Florida in March 6-12, 2020, IF this does not fall on spring break they would go during winter break.
The trip would include workshops, rehearsal time and would allow the MHS students to participate in the marching band parade in Disney World.
The band is conducting fundraisers through the years to hopefully collect the needed funds to pay the $1,400 per student cost of the trip.
The band is also looking into purchasing 200 new marching band uniforms hopefully by fall 2019 or spring 2020.  They will be applying for grants to help with this cost.

Out-of-State Art Trip to Chicago
MHS art teachers Wade Judge and Kirk Niehouse asked for board approval to take students on an art trip to Chicago on October 5. Stops will include the National Museum of Mexican Art and the Art Institute. The trip was approved by the board.

Out-of-State Trip to Minneapolis to view Hamilton musical
MHS social studies teacher Brad Rahmiller requested the board approve this trip to Minneapolis to attend the Hamilton musical on October 4. This also includes questions and answers with cast members of Hamilton, which is part of the Hamilton Education Program grant. The board approved this trip.

Naming wrestling room
Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte, with the approval of the Naming Facilities Committee, requested the board  approve the naming of the new wrestling practice room in Roundhouse Phase 2 the “Allie Morrison Wrestling Training Room.” Morrison is a an 1926 MHS graduate who went on to win the 1928 Olympic gold medal, which is one of his many accomplishments.
The board approved the naming of the facility.

“The board approved the expansion of classrooms at the Monday night meeting.  Not the bricks and mortar type of expansion, but the moving the walls of the classroom to include ventures out into the world.
A band trip to Orlando was approved for spring of 2020.  It’s a guess at the time of spring break, but whenever the band travels, it will represent the Marshalltown school district well and look smart in their new uniforms.
The annual art trip to Chicago was also approved, as was a history trip to Minneapolis. Each of these trips will take our students to new places to experience new things.

Marshalltown Schools Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte presents a check of $2,788 to Karina Hernandez of Mid-Iowa Community Action to help those impacted by the July 19 tornado. Marshalltown Schools staff donated money to the effort if they wore jeans during two staff days on August 21 and 22.

Marshalltown Schools staff held two jeans day prior to the start of school where donations were collected from those who wore jeans to go to Mid-Iowa Community Action to help those impacted by the July 19 tornado.
The district raised $2,778 as part of the effort and donated it to Karina Hernandez of MICA at the September 4 board meeting.

Iowa Assessment Results
Director of Instruction Dr. Lisa Stevenson shared 2017-18 Iowa Assessment scores and other data.
Several growth numbers are promising, but there is still work ahead, Stevenson said.
The district now looks ahead to the new state assessment, which will be taken in Marshalltown the second week of April and will be online.

Instructional Support Levy
Director of Business Operations, Paulette Newbold, presented this item as a discussion item only.
Currently, the instructional support levy is funded by property tax. Newbold talked about another method to fund it which consists of property tax and income surtax.

Three annual appointments were made at the meeting.
Paulette Newbold  was appointed and took the oath as Board Secretary/Treasurer.
The board also appointed  Cartwright, Druker and Ryden as School Attorney for the 2018-2019 school year and Ahlers & Cooney, PC as Additional Legal Counsel for selected legal issues for 2018-2019.

“The board had its first school board meeting of the year.  The annual meeting was conducted, 3 student representatives were sworn in (America Dominguez, Jane Ragland and Jocelin Sharfnejda), student achievement scores were reviewed showing trend data and the instructional support levy was discussed.  It will be a delight to have the student representatives at board meetings to share input on the impact that board decisions will have on students, tell stories about their activities and share their perspectives with board members.

In going through boxes of things collected from my teaching years, I found a banner that I displayed in my AP Literature course.  I asked board members to reflect on it and I ask you to do the same. “If everyone in our school had your attitude, what kind of place would it be?”  It’s early in the year and you can change the climate of your classroom if it’s not what you choose for it to be.  Have an exciting year!” – Bea Niblock
